As the nation prepares to celebrate Singapore’s 58th National Day, many will dress in red and white, hoist the national flag and watch the fireworks. Apart from these usual activities, why not try making something red and white to show your patriotism while having fun with your kids?

Here is an easy recipe and a craft idea that you can try at home: 

Red and white jelly

Ingredients:
Agar-agar powder
Fresh milk
Red food colouring

Methods:
To make the white layer
1. Pour water and agar-agar powder into a pot. Follow the instructions on the agar-agar powder packaging to determine how much water to use. Stir and bring to a gentle boil.

2. Add fresh milk and mix well.

To make the red layer
3. Repeat step 1.

4. Add a few drops of the red food colouring and mix well.

To assemble
5. Pour the red colouring mixture into a mould and leave to cool.

6. When the first red layer has set, pour in the white colouring mixture and leave to cool.

7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 until all the mixtures are used up. Leave to cool and put into the fridge.

8. When the agar-agar jelly has set, cut into pieces and serve. 

Red and white paper pinwheel

Materials:
2 square sheets of red paper
2 square sheets of white paper
1 piece of A4 paper (to make paper straw)
Double-sided tape
Scissors and cutter
Push pin

Methods:
1. Fold the red and white paper diagonally and cut into triangles. You should have four red triangles and four white triangles.

2. Cut out a small square from another piece of paper. Paste a piece of double-sided tape on it.

3. Paste the first triangle on the square with the tip towards the middle.

4. Take another triangle of a different colour and paste it so that the longer side of the second triangle is on the vertical line of the first triangle. Repeat this for the rest of the triangles.

5. For the last triangle, tuck the right half under the first triangle to complete the pattern. You’ll need a piece of double-sided tape to hold the last triangle in place.

6. Paste a piece of double-sided tape in the middle. Take the outer triangles and fold them inwards to paste on the double-sided tape.

7. To make the paper straw, roll a piece of A4 paper diagonally and cut both ends to make them even. Attach the pinwheel to the paper straw with a push pin and play!
