Beauty in the little corner
Feeling overwhelmed? It’s OK! We all experience these moments – whether it’s pressure of work, school, family or social commitments. It’s important to be kind to yourself and take some time to relax.
The Calm Corners in Cheng San-Seletar provide soothing spaces where you can pause, breathe and connect with your neighbours. Situated at void decks, these areas feature beautiful murals painted by local artists and students, adding a vibrant touch of creativity to the neighbourhood.
The mural at the Calm Corner of Blk 524 Ang Mo Kio Ave 5 was created by a group of passionate students.
Ms Nadia Ahmad Samdin, MP for Ang Mo Kio GRC who initiated the idea of creating Calm Corners, shared in a Facebook video: “We wanted to encourage residents to come out of their homes, prevent social isolation, create stronger community bonds and remind people that they’re not alone.”
During the COVID-19 pandemic, she observed that many in the community, especially seniors, were struggling in silence and felt that mental health was still a taboo topic. In response, she launched the first Calm Corner at Blk 438 Ang Mo Kio Ave 3 in 2022, providing a space for residents to enjoy the breeze, chat with neighbours and foster social connections.

Resident Ms Ruzaidah Rasid, 37, enjoys the mural of dolphins swimming in the ocean at Blk 423 Ang Mo Kio Ave 3. “Looking at the mural helps me relax after a hard day's work and temporarily forget about the problems I face at work,” she said. She also likes to visit the Calm Corner on her days off to have some quiet moments to herself.

In addition to the murals, each Calm Corner is equipped with a list of helplines for those in need of a listening ear. Resident Ms Olivia Sek, 21, said: “The Calm Corner not only lifts spirits but also offers support for mental well-being. It’s reassuring to know that if I ever need someone to talk to, I have options right here.”
A list of helplines is available at each Calm Corner to support those in need.
To date, there are five Calm Corners located at Blks 423, 438 and 573 Ang Mo Kio Ave 3, Blk 524 Ang Mo Kio Ave 5 and Blk 511 Ang Mo Kio Ave 8. Residents at Blks 546 and 557 Ang Mo Kio Ave 10 can also look forward to having these tranquil spaces at their void decks.
