With the final 10 trees planted near Blk 535 Serangoon North Ave 4 at our annual Tree Planting Day on 3 November, Ang Mo Kio Town Council has successfully reached its target of planting 10,000 trees and shrubs in our town this year. This is 10 times the number of trees and shrubs planted last year.

Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Laila Sofea from Little Green House planted a pink mempat near Blk 535 Serangoon North Ave 4.

Community support was instrumental in achieving this milestone. More than 400 residents, students, volunteers and staff from Ang Mo Kio Town Council, as well as our MPs of Ang Mo Kio GRC, Kebun Baru SMC and Yio Chu Kang SMC, took part in our tree planting activities throughout the year. These greening efforts not only beautify our town but also contribute to a healthier and more sustainable environment for all.

Among the participants were students from Little Green House. Mrs Buvaneswary Nathan, mother of K1 student Tharun Nathan, said: “Planting trees together made us feel more connected to the community. It’s wonderful to know that we can enjoy the new greenery, which also helps to improve our mental well-being.”

Another parent, Mrs Joewyn Chong, added: “My son was so excited to help plant a tree after learning about greenery in school. He was able to see first-hand that it takes effort and patience to grow a tree, which made the experience even more meaningful for him.”

Mrs Buvaneswary Nathan and Mrs Joewyn Chong are very supportive of their sons’ participation in the tree planting activity.

The roots of our greening efforts can be traced back to June 1963, when founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew planted a Mempat tree in Farrer Circus to promote environmental awareness. In November 1971, the government launched the annual Tree Planting Day, which continues to this day.

Singapore is now moving towards becoming a City in Nature. The town council is also doing its part to realise the nation’s vision by bringing our community together to actively participate in greening initiatives.
