Turning bins into art

Have you noticed the colourful bins around the neighbourhood? They are painted by the talented students from Anderson Primary School, Jing Shan Primary School, Sengkang Green Primary School, Xin Min Primary School, Yio Chu Kang Primary School and Hougang Secondary School as part of the Creative Bin Project.

This is an outreach programme launched by Ang Mo Kio Town Council in 2021 to brighten up the estates and promote a clean and green environment. Since then, 96 bins have been redecorated.

Ms Felicia Ong Tze Yu and Ms Dharshini Rajah, teachers from Sengkang Green Primary School and Jing Shan Primary School respectively, said the programme has given students the opportunity to raise awareness in the community about caring for the environment.

Students from Sengkang Green Primary School redecorated the town council’s bins.

“Our students have learnt about the importance of keeping the environment clean and that art can be used to convey positive messages,” said Ms Ong.

Ms Dharshini Rajah added: “Our students were able to hone their artistic skills through the programme. It was a good platform for them to have fun with their classmates while practising active citizenship.”

Indeed, the students from Jing Shan Primary School enjoyed the activity. Asher Ang, 12, said: “My classmates and I had so much fun making art together. We were able to express our thoughts and ideas about keeping the nation clean.”

Charlene Peh, also 12, who painted a cute monster holding the “Feed Me!” sign on the bin with a group of friends, said: “It was nice to be able to give back to the community. The decorated bins serve as a good reminder for people to throw rubbish responsibly.”

Bins decorated by students from Jing Shan Primary School aim to raise awareness of a clean and green environment.

Jing Shan Primary School has actively participated in the programme every year since 2021, with about 450 students taking part to date, while Sengkang Green Primary School joined the programme for the first time in 2022. About 30 students from the Primary 5 and 6 Art Club redecorated the bins, which were then placed around Fernvale estates.

When you see these colourful bins, take a moment to appreciate the hard work of the students and remember the following messages shared by Asher and Charlene to keep our environment clean:

•    Put your litter in the bin.

•    Pick up litter that we see, even if it is not ours.

•    Remind each other to keep our estates clean.

•    If we see people littering, encourage them to pick up their litter and put it in the bin.

•    Reduce the amount of waste we produce by recycling, reusing and upcycling our things.
