Keeping our lifts safe
Lifts play a crucial role in our HDB blocks, providing convenience for our daily movements. Behind the scenes, a dedicated team of lift specialists work tirelessly to ensure that these vital systems are well maintained and running smoothly.
Mr Michael Chin, Lift Manager of Ang Mo Kio Town Council, emphasises the importance of a meticulous work plan. He said: “We maintain comprehensive documentation for each lift cabin under our care. This approach facilitates our maintenance work, including monthly servicing, timely replacement of worn parts and effective communication with our vendors.”
The lift specialist team is proactive in carrying out maintenance checks, particularly after lifts have been serviced. They also make targeted visits to follow up on feedback from residents and ensure that thorough inspections are carried out where necessary.
From assessing the responsiveness of lift call buttons and indicators to checking essential safety features such as door sensors, the team rigorously evaluates a variety of metrics to ensure that each lift cabin is safe and comfortable to use.
Community engagement is also a crucial aspect of their work. Michael said: “If a lift needs to be taken offline for repairs, we work with the Public Relations Team to prepare and display notices on site to inform residents of the shutdown.” He added that in mature estates with only one lift, the team prioritises swift action to minimise downtime and alleviate any inconvenience to residents.
Caring for lifts
Even seemingly minor actions can have a significant impact on lift operations. Michael said: “Using keys or umbrellas to press lift buttons or inserting an object between the lift doors to prevent them from closing can cause the lift to malfunction.”
“Forcibly pushing personal mobility devices (PMDs) and personal mobility aids (PMAs) into the lift can also cause friction that damages the cabin’s vinyl flooring,” he added.
To ensure a smoother and safer journey for everyone, he encouraged residents to use the lifts with care. Here are some tips.
• Press lift buttons gently and avoid using foreign objects.
• When loading items into the lift, be careful not to hit the door sensors, as this can cause the doors to become misaligned and lead to breakdowns.
• Do not obstruct lift doors with any objects.
• Remind children not to jump in the lift.
• Be aware of the lift’s weight limit and do not exceed it.
• Do not litter, urinate or smoke in the lift to ensure a pleasant experience for all users.
