Residents of Blocks 435A and 435B Fernvale Road may have seen a basket containing clothes pegs hanging from a pole at the walkway in between the blocks. 

What is it for? Turns out, it’s a clothes peg recycling initiative started by resident Jayden Sim, who is only in Primary 3! He started it to encourage people to reuse old items around the home and raise awareness of sustainable living.

While walking his dog with his father around the neighbourhood, Jayden saw clothes pegs lying around on the ground, which may have been dropped by residents while hanging out their laundry. The boy felt that cleaners would just sweep the pegs away and felt sad about the waste, so he started to pick them up. He placed them in a basket and, together with his father, hung the basket in a common area for residents to take them and give them a new lease of life.

Residents, inspired by Jayden doing his bit for the environment, chipped in with ideas on how to reuse the clothes pegs.

Hou Jia Wen, 12, said: “I am inspired by Jayden who has a heart for the environment and people. Instead of buying new pegs, I can use the ones collected by Jayden to peg my clothes.”

Ms Siri Fardianna, 28, also said: “I appreciate that Jayden has an eco-friendly mindset at a young age. Many people these days prefer to throw old things away and buy new ones, especially small items like clothes pegs. I am keen to reuse the clothes pegs for my creative pursuits by turning them into photo pegs to hang memories.”
